For years I had thought about building some sort of storage under the chart table. There's a nice hunk of real estate back there that's wasted. So I took some poster board material and started to play with making a template to fit the curve of the hull for a new cabinet side. I made it a two shelf cabinet but set it back a bit to allow for room for my foot when I'm actually using the table for chart work. Then I designed a facing for the front where I could mount a new door.
As you can see by the other photos, I also did some work on the chart table top, and the bulkhead that divides the aft cabin. I never liked the two slatted teak doors, so I removed them. The mounted piece I made (teak veneer over ply) is going to be the mounting surface for a flat screen TV. The old holes in the bulkhead were from stereo speakers that the previous owner had installed, and the patch next to the electric panel was where the 12 volt lighter had been - I relocated it behind the electric panel on that shelf area that runs fore and aft on each side of the cabinets. I can easily access the power source, but don't have it and the wire from the plug in dangling out of the bulkhead - just made it cleaner. The finish is teak veneer that I stained and poly coated. I did the chart table top also, and my next step will be to redo my new and the original cabinets below the chart table - but for now, I'm trying to finish up top side work and get out on the water!
