I'll be moving a 336 from Annapolis to New Bern, North Carolina, this summer and would like to air condition her. She'll be used mostly for extended cruises. How likely is it that a portable a/c unit producing 7,000 Btus would make her comfortable or would 16,000 be required, as manufacturers suggest? I've already have 2 large house batteries and upgraded alternator and inverter because of refrigeration, so would I need a genset to run either a portable or self-contained a/c or could I get by with another battery? Thanks in advance for the help. John

I'm doing just the opposite!

Just bought my 37.5 in New Bern (where my family is) and will be brining it to Annapolis in the spring. What takes you and your boat there?

go for 16,000 btu

John: The portable AC won't keep the entire boat cool, especially in July and August. The 16,000 btu size will do an adequate job... and if you want o run it away from the dock, you will need a generator.

Agree with mike

We've got a H34 with a 16,000 BTU MarineAir. Anything less wouldn't cut it in NC. We love to anchor out so I looked into an inverter but you'd need the battery capacity of a WWII Submarine even with a 7000BTU unit. On the bright side, in NC it's tolerable from about mid-March through June and September through November. Plus you've got Ocracoke and Cape Lookout with a nice sea breeze during the Dog Days of Summer.

Get some fans.

John: Get some Hella fans for the berths. At least you can try to sleep. Don't think your gonna get much sleep with the generator running all nite long. You will probably also need screens for your hatches and the companionway too.

You definetly need at least 16,000 amd a generator to run it.I have a 450 and I believe 28,000 [2 units] and they are ducted and the batteries,NEVER.

moving to New Bern

John, I keep my 37.5 in New Bern at Northwest creek marina in Fairfield Harbor (I highly recommend this marina been there since 1993) it offers the best hurricane protection in the area and has great amenities and a great staff. I have a 19,000 btu hvac unit on my boat (the largest 110 volt available) the 16,000 btu should be more than adequate for your boat. Ron
