Looking for pro's and con's in reguards to mounting davits on our 1981 H33. I've searched all the archives on this topic but found nothing too specific. I'd like to hear from H33 owners who actually have davits on their stern whether or not you like them, performance issues, problems boarding the boat or whatever. We recently inherated an Apex 9' RIB with a Yahama 6hp. Of course the engine would be secured off the dink but the dink weighs about 150lbs with a full can of fuel and other misc. crap we keep in it.

I had davits on my H30

Worked great; big attraction for me was reduced drag while cruising and security for the dinghy. I would strongly recommend getting everything out of the dinghy to minimize the weight. I would also take a good look at how much dinghy hangs out to each side; 9' would have been too wide for me.

H33 Davits are great

I built davits for my H33 and love them. They make boarding the dingy easier. I also have a place to mount solar panels. I can post a picture if you like .Kevin

Not a davits fan.

Before you invest make sure you somehow simulate sailing with davits. Maybe it's my claustrophobic nature but having that dinghy right by my head really bothers me. Same reason I don't like cockpit enclosures and almost never have the dodger up I suppose. And there is the issue of handling MOB with the transom blocked. And increased windage and lack of visibility. I've sailed with them, just be sure you try them first also. Problem is what is the alternative?

Davits

I am not a big fan of stern davits. I put my dingy on the foredeck. It is small enough that I can get around it and light enough that I can pick it up and lower it into the water. I read in one of the latest issues of "Sail" that someone rigged a block and tackle system using the wisker pole. They had the dingy on the foredeck and raised it using a block and tackle on the wisker pole. Once the boat was high enough to clear the guard rails they swung it out and lowered it into the water. This seems like a good idea to me. I guess it all depends on where you are going and how much money you want to spend.

stern or deck mount?

I think we are leaning towards the davits. We can get the dink on the deck, have done that for years. We don't do many 24+ hour crossings, we are mainly coastal sailers and find that crossing to the Keys, Cuba and the Bahamas require less than 24 hours most of the time, occasionally a 36 hour run. The rest of the time we use the dink daily, hoisting it on the deck for an 8 hour sail to the next anchorage is a real pain. The MOB issue is one I didn't think of, I'll have to work on that. Being closed in is no problem, we have a HUGE bimini. That is a necessity since we live a quarter mile from the sun. Now my next question, deck mounted or stern mounted, pro's and con's.....

Kevin, I'd love to see a picture

of your davits. I've got an '81 h33 and am now contemplating davits. My hesitation is that with the narrow stern and minimal freeboard at the stern what would they look like. I've got an 8'-6" Quicksilver AirDeck so weight isn't a problem. Davits would be a lot easier than storing on the foredeck but I'm not sure how much "stuff" I want built onto the back of the boat.

H34 With Davits

We have davits on our Hunter 34 and love them. I'll attach a photo. This is our H34 hanging a Boatex 10' dinghy. I have photos from other angles if you are interested. Gary
