Was hanging the genoa yesterday after getting it fixed only to have the roller firling line come apart on me. Looking at the recesed drum it appears that it will be difficult to get at since it is recessed below the deck by the anchor locker. Anybody been there and done that ?

Single line...

or continuous (double line) is an important question. Most got switched to, or should have been , to single line. Best plan there, is to remove the "core" for about 15 ft. or so closest to the drum so that it won't load up the drum. And yes, it is a bitch to get to...

Furling Line

Since working on this system inside the anchor locker really is a nightmare, is it possible to remove a furling system foil and then slide the remainder of the furling mechanism up the forestay to a decent working height?

thats the problem

That is the problem, how do you open the drum to get at the line?

Which type of furler?

Single line to the furler or a continuous line that goes both to and from the furler? If it is a continuous line and the line just came apart at the splice than you could just re-splice it. There should be enough extra at the cockpit end to do this without effecting access to the line from the cockpit. If the line just needs replaced you could make a temporary splice to a new line and (with the sheets off) just run it through the furler till it comes out the other end. I can't advise you on a single line system as I have never had one.

Ah ha....!

Ok, worked on it today, and promptly busted off the three nylon screws that hold the drum, and then busted off the nylon screw that apparently locks it in place(they use nylon as the furler has two different types of metal). So Monday I will go to the local rigging shop and try and get the nylon screws and then attempt to drill out the remainder. Did buy 60 fet of 3/8 sheets and had the first 15 feet of core taken out so it goes into the drum. Whew.....
