I'm about to fix a compression post problem on my H-31.It occurs to me that this is the perfect opportunity to UPGRADE the wiring configuration that goes into the mast. As you all know, currently the wires are crammed into the base of the mast step and every time you step the mast you pray they don't get chopped off. What about cutting a hole in the mast a few inches from the bottom, running the wire ends out to plug recepticles on the deck of the boat (near the mast)? Many boat manufacturers use this arrangement. 1- is it safe to cut a hole in the mast without weakening the structure. 2- is it too difficult (and therefore expensive) to put a terminal for each wire on the deck. (radio, steaming and anchor lights, wind indicator). 3- should I just cram the wiring bundle back inside the way it's been for 16 years?

Here's What I'm Doing (not original)

Rewire the mast while it's off and leave 7' of extra wire at the mast base. When you install the mast, put the wires back in the same hole (and make a drip leg). Make all connection including the VHF antenna inside the boat near the base of the compression post under the seat. It's been done before and avoids connector failure at the mast base. Inside the belly of the wiring beast

At the base of my mast, there is no open hole. The wires have been caulked into submission. Are you suggesting leaving the pipe open for the wires without getting water down the slot? How is that possible? I like the idea of making the connections down below where it's dry and warm. However, I'm a little worried about the ability to feed the wires (with connectors) up through the compression post and the tube every fall and then every spring. Tell me more about this drip loop, too!

h31 mast wiring

i bought my boat used from fairport marine (tartan). the mast has a hole, approx 1.5" diameter that fm put in mast to get to wires in mast to facilitate stepping/unstepping. i do not step mast for winter storage but it appears that it should protect wires.
