I'm about to fix a compression post problem on my H-31.It occurs to me that this is the perfect opportunity to UPGRADE the wiring configuration that goes into the mast.As you all know, currently the wires are crammed into the base of the mast step and every time you step the mast you pray they don't get chopped off. What about cutting a hole in the mast a few inches from the bottom, running the wire ends out to plug recepticles on the deck of the boat (near the mast)? Many boat manufacturers use this arrangement.1- is it safe to cut a hole in the mast without weakening the structure.2- is it too difficult (and therefore expensive) to put a terminal for each wire on the deck. (radio, steaming and anchor lights, wind indicator).3- should I just cram the wiring bundle back inside the way it's been for 16 years?
