H31 Leaks

I have noticed in several interior pictures that many H31's have the same leaks that mine has, namely a leak/stain on the starboard wall of the V-berth and another one on the port wall of the aft berth. I have read all the history forums and have not found a final answer. Any confirmations on where are these leaks coming from and how to fix them? Thank you all Ed

Start tightening the toe rail.

Ed: I would suggest that you start by tightening the toe rail. Someone on the deck with a large phillips screwdriver and someone on a socket wrench. Just tighten them all up. The only leaks we have ever seen have been the compression post and a small leak in the port vberth from the bow light (when the boat was new).

Doesn't that come from the comp post?

I though ultimately the water could come in over the post, seep out through the decks and then down the various "walls" inside the boat. This is a worst case situation but I think this had happened on my previous H31. Steve D. your thoughts?

Same problen

I believe it is the toe rail and the fact that the water tends to puddle there at that location instead of running all the way aft. Someone posted the idea of using a leaf blower to pressurize the interior, wet down the exterior and see where it bubbles. That is my next step. Chandler

Bow pulpit attachment

Same problem with my boat. I hypothesized that it may have been the attachment of the bow pulpit at the toe rail, so I tightened and caulked around it. So far no leak, even with a hurricane and subsequent rains.

Yep, Same problem...

I've had the same problem on my H31 over the years. Initially, water draining from the anchor locker, through a hose in the forward part of the V-berth, was the main culprit. I replaced and re-caulked the fitting in the bottom of the anchor well, replaced the hose, and re-configured the thru-hull drain. The original thru-hull fitting was kind of mickey mouse, so I got a threaded elbow that could be caulked on the outside and tightened on the inside, and that seemed to work. There were some recent posts concerning this issue on another Hunter model. BUT... occasionally it's still damp after a rainstorm on the starboard side of the forward end of the V-berth, and I'll try the earlier suggestions regarding the toe rail and the bow pulpit. A towel (ridiculous, I know) stuffed into the space beneath the anchor well seemed to absorb the residual moisture, so I was thinking it was still seeping through the anchor well somehow, but now I think that Steve's suggestion and Tim's suggestion are next on my list. Chandler's suggestion is excellent, but I don't have a leaf blower, and I'm not sure how I could pressurize the boat with it if I did. And let's all hope that Don's hypothesis is incorrect; those two words... 'compression post'... give me the friggin' heebie jeebies. Regarding the aft berth, I've got evidence of moisture on the inside of the transom, instead of the port wall. So far, I have not been able to identify it's source, and any ideas will certainly be appreciated. Good luck - Rick

Water travel mysteriously!

Ed: Water travels mysteriously around a boat. As Don and others have pointed out the compression post leaks and water will flow out of the lights that are on the crossmember. If you get leaks in the ports or the hand rails that water can/will flow down the liner and who knows were it will appear. When our compression post leaked we had obvious signs on the bulkhead between the head and the salon and water would leak out of the light on the starboard side of the crossmember.

I had the leak in the Stbd V-berth

My leak in the V-berth was from the hole that the anchor locker pin locks into. I removed the small steel plate and looked inside and was able to see the edge of a plywood board. I filled the hole with epoxy completely then ground out the spot for the pin again. Hasn't leaked since.

Anchor Locker Water

On our 34 - basically same boat - this weekend, I saw some water coming from the front of the boat. I openend up the round port in the V-berth to get to the anchor locker fitting and it was just a bit too shiny in there. I stuck my arm in and there was probably a foot deep of water in there (below the anchor locker and draining no-where). I had to siphon the water out to a bucket with a hose from a sun-shower. I don't think a big hole that doesn't drain is a very good design feature, but hey, we still love the boat.
