1984 H31 sprung a leak in the holding tank pump-out hose. When I went to remove the hose, I found that the hose clamp on the deck fitting is trapped between the deck and the hull liner. I cut the hose just below the hull liner, but can't rangle the clamp past the hole in the deck for the plate.
Can just barely see the clamp from the deck and cant get to it at all from underside. Am I going to have to cut the top off the deck plate to get this thing out? Has anyone replaced that deck filler plate or pump out hose on the H31?
I'm thinking about re plumbing the whole system with PVC. Has anyone had success with that? In the past I had a manual pump under the v birth that was Teed into the pumpout hose to pump overboard via the thru hull fitting under the sink. I took that out years ago because the pump leaked and you can't pump overboard here anyway. I rebuilt the pump and would like to hook that back up in the system to manually pump out through the deck fitting. I'm hoping I can screw in an adaptor to the deck plate and pump into a container on the dock. I sail all winter and when the pumpouts on the lake are closed, I would like to be able to pump it out myself. Anyone know how to do this?
Thank you

Sounds like either a deck deal from above (hard to re-fix the deck though) or opeing up from underneath.

The manual pump out is questionable. Once you pump it up, what's gonna catch the sh*t? Even if you do the adapter, where do you go with it? I remember a discussion like this years ago - decided it wasn't such a good idea. Aren't there pump out stations?

Unscrew the stainless pump out fitting and pull the fitting and hose stub up out of the boat ?? It probably got there on assembly when the hose was attached and run down thru the deck to be hooked onto the tee in the line. ??

I have seen an adaptor that screws into the deck plate and a hose couples to that and it's supposed to be leak proof. I have a 25 gallon gas caddy on wheels that I never use, so I thought that I would convert it into a sh*t caddy instead. Maybe I should mount the gusher pump to the caddy intstead of inside the boat. I'm not sure that the gusher pump could pull the black water up out of the boat, but I know it coud pump it up from below.
As I said in the original post, I like to sail all winter. The pumpout station is closed in the winter, so I have to figure out a way to pump it out myself.

The deck fitting won't unscrew, the hose is secured to it with a hose clamp. There is not enough clearance for the hose clamp to come up out of the hole that the deck fitting sits in. I'm probably looking at cutting off the top of the deck fitting and pulling the hose out from below. I don't want to do any cutting on the deck hole. I'll have to buy a new deck fitting then, but the fittings that come stock on this hunter are all crap anyway. I was hoping someone had replaced the hose or deck fitting could tell me how they did it.

No chance of reaching in and cutting the hose clamp strap with a Dremel tool?? cold chisel??
fittings on my Hunter are 27 years old and still work exactly as designed.. wouldn't call 'em crap..

I had my hoses changed out on our H'31 many years ago. I remember that this was a major problem and cost a small fortune to r/r the hose for the deck fitting.

Even if you cut off the fitting at the deck, you will probably do major damage to the non-skid. Have you removed the screws that hold the fitting into the deck to determine how large the original hole may be?

No, I can barely see the edge of the hose clamp. My deck plates are 28 years old and made of cheap stamped metal and the cap is made of plastic. All three of the caps fit loosly and leak. They are suppesed to open and close with a winch handle, but I can take my caps off with my fingers. I have never seen deck fill plates this cheap. I can say with all honesty that they are crap. I'm glad Hunter put good deck fills on your boat!

I have replaced the main hoses from head to tank and from tank to pump with rigid PVC. It eliminated the premeated hose smell. I have also added a manual pump to pump out sited in the locker in the head. It (along with the piping) makes that locker pretty unuseable though. When I did the piping, I looked at replacing the pipe to the deck fitting but that's all I did. Looked and thought no way !!!!!

The tank outlet goes to a Y valve (lockable to meet washngton state regs) and then 1 pipe to the deck pump out and 1 pipe to the manual pump.

Hi Steve,

Yes I took the 3 screws out attaching the deck filler to the deck and I also cut the hose below the deck. I tried to pull the deck plate up and out of the hole, but the hole is just slightly larger than the deck plate neck with the hose on it, but not large enough for the hose clamp to clear the hole. I don't want to notch out the deck for the hose clamp to come out, so I think I'm going to have to cut off the top of the deck plate. I'll have to put some kind of protection down on the deck to protect it. It will have to be very thin, because I can only pull the deck plate out a couple of inches before the hose clamp hits the underside of the deck. I don't think there is enough clearance to get a salzall in there, so it's going to be tricky. The other thought is to use a dremel tool to cut an access in the inner liner to get to the hose clamp from the inside and then make a plate to cover the access hole.
When you had your hoses replaced, how did they get the deck fitting off? They they have replace the deck fill with a new one?

Is Spurgeon's in Stockton still in business? They probably sold these boats originally. They may have some advise on how this was done originally.

Sounds to me like you have 2 choices:

1) loosen the clamp and slide it off the cut hose (or cut off the clamp) or

2) use a hacksaw blade or something similar to cut the filler plate neck.

Seems like a bad idea to cut the glass, despite the difficulties in getting the c,alp off.

Spurgeon's is still in business, but they had their Hunter contract pulled years ago. Weren't living up to Hunter's standards I was told. I have also replaced all of the hose in our boat, and I didn't have any problem with the deck fitting. Like was mentioned before, use a Dremel with a good cut off wheel. Or try to cut the hose with hose cutters down to where the hose clamp is, then you can probably pull the clamp off by hand. My memory isn't what it used to be, but I believe I pulled the hose, clamp, attached to the deck fitting up out of the hole at one time. I also would not advise cutting the deck. Not a good idea. Keep wrestling with it. It will get tired and give up. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply Robert,

The problem is that the hose clamp on the deck fitting is trapped between the underside of the deck and the inner fiberglass liner of the boat. I have cut the hose running up and taken the screws out of the deck fitting on deck. When I try to pull the deck fitting up and out of the hole in the deck, the hose clamp wont clear the hole. It's so tight that I can't get anything in there to cut the hose clamp-- I can barely see the edge of it. (the boat must have been put together with the deck fitting already installed in the deck as it was put on, thus trapping the hose clamp) There is no way that I'm going to cut into the deck so that the hose clamp will clear the hole, so it looks like I will have to cut the top of the deck fitting off and then cut a notch in the inner liner to clear the hose clamp coming out from below.
I'm then planning on replacing the hoses with 1 1/2" PVC pipe and using rubber couplers on the waste tank, toilet and deck fitting..... at least that's the plan so far, until someone shares a better plan...........

I changed mine and all I did was bought a 2 or 2 1/2 plastic plug used to cover a hole and used a hole saw to cut into the liner (head wall) that exposed the hose clamp and deck fitting. After that it was a piece of cake and when finished I put the white hole plug/cap in the hole and it looks finished and like it should be there. Good Luck Oh by the way you can buy the plugs at woodworking stores.
