H30 traveler question

I have an 81' H30 and the traveller lines are secured at the cockpit with these simple no-moving-part cleats. I would like to replace them with cam cleats, but the cieling of the cabin does not show the mounting of the traveller cleats so I am confused as to how to make the swap. Is the cabin top that thick? Or is it a liner? If it is a liner, do I need to put in access holes to make the install work? Any insight or ideas would be appreciated.

Cam Cleats

Fred, Not sure how far the backing plate continues in the ceiling in the vincinty of the cam cleats. If your H30 is similiar to mine, check the depth that the screws are set for the winch on the cabin top. I believe that the winch screws are set in a metal backing plate. This could give you an idea on depth. Since the amount of strain will be the same, an alternative would be to use the same depth as the existing screws holding the jam cleats. My H30 is on the hard up at Severn River Marina for some long term work, give me a call if you want to talk, I'm in the Newport News phone book. Jeff Dunham

Remove one of the screws!

Fred: Just remove one of the screws and you will know how the existing cleat is attached. I think that you have a balsa or plywood core. They are probably attached just like the rails on the cabin top.

Two possibilities.

Last night I removed a cheek block and a standing block from the cabin roof of my H37C. I was surprised to find that they were just screws, about 1.25" long. The blocks were used for directing the mainsheet from the forward end of the mast back to a cabin winch. So there was a fair amount of force on those blocks. I now keep the mainsheet at the traveler in the cockpit. On the other hand the cabin winch and cleat are bolted through. Or at least I think that they are. There are round teak blocks on the inside of the cabin covering what I assume are the bolts/nuts. I plan to add deck organizers and rope clutches for taking some lines back to the cockpit. I will bolt those through with large washers. The inside cabin aesthetics are not a problem with me.

Thanks guys!

Thanks for the replies. I did find out it is a liner, but I haven't made much progress beyond that. Jeff, I will probably look you up sometime.
