Hello, I'm looking to buy a boat in Florida. We live in a canal system with limited water depth at times so I may be forced to go with a draft of 4'. I very much like the look of the H30. The problem is I also like sailing close to the wind well. Can any H30 shoal draft owners advise how well their boats go against other similar size craft? Hopefully yours Patrick Randall Port Charlotte Fl.

shoal draft H30

Patrick - My boat is a Hunter 30 ft. shoal draft 1977. The boat is a dream to sail with good pointing to weather and little weather helm if the sails are properly trimmed. With the skeg in front of the rudder it is quite stable in a seaway however it does not turn very sharply for manuoevering in a narrow canal. Watch for sagging compression post, delamination of deck around the mast, core rot in the floor of the cockpit. Compared to how well it sails, these problems are not too serious. It is one of the best boat values you will find. Henry

The way to go!

I have an H320 with the shoal wing keel. The boat sails like a dream. I don't miss a deep keel boat at all. I don't see any performance issues given the design Hunter puts into the keel. I would guess that is why the standard on a Hunter is the shoal and exception is the deep keel. I would think that in Fla. you would want the advantage of the shallow keel.

Shoal pointing penalty

A winged shoal draft keel should do better than the Cherubinis without wings. But there will always be a penalty working a shoal draft keel into the wind. First, they won't point as well, and second, they will make more leeway. Our '77 h27 shoal draft tacks through 110 degrees (on the GPS) with the jib barberhauled to about 12 degrees off the centerline. On the other hand, pointing is overrated for a cruiser. Most of our time is spent reaching around Lake Erie. Well, there were a couple of passages this summer where being able to make 45 degrees off the true wind would have saved an hour or more. Finally, the shoal draft keel is a big plus in our cruising grounds, especially at current water levels. Drawing only 3 1/4 feet means we can go most anywhere. But since the "deep" keel on our model was only a 4 foot draft, I do wish that's what we had. David Lady Lillie David Lady Lillie
