h30 Selden mast luff groove cover

I would like to add a boomkicker to my 81 H30. The mast luff groove from the boom on down has some type of cover in it. Has anyone removed this cover, and what is it made of ? Does the entire piece have to come out?

Any tips for installing a boomkicker ???

Have you considered at Garhauer Rigid Boom Vang? Take a look. They customize the mast and boom attachment points as part of the price.

The cover is aluminum and there is an electrical wire raceway behind it. I would second Steve's suggestion to look at Garhauer.
