Help! I think I need to change the motor mounts on my vessel. The shaft as it exits the hull is now rubbing on the lower side of the opening. I discovered this after haul out this fall. The strut and the cutlass bearing appear to be fine, and the coupling to the shaft and tranny is ok. The whole engine has seemed to drop down. The mounts seem to be the only thing that could cause this type of problem. Has anybody had this happen to them? How much of a job is it to change the mounts and is there a better aftermarket set of mounts I could use. The single lunger has much viberation but I did not notice it to be more than normal, but how do you tell from day to day season to season use. Is there sombody that has had experience with this? I got all winter to think about this and would like to get all the information together for my spring project.

H-30 engine positioning

There were several aluminum shims under my engine mounts. I presume their purpose was to raise the engine a bit. Total thickness of the cluster - perhaps 1/8th inch. When I had the mounts off last year, I noticed that the mount itself had worn away some of the fiberglass surface on the engine bed. With the Y-series engines there is a considerable amount of vibration that is rough on everything in the area. I have since remounted mine on 3/8" x 3 x 18 aluminum plate bedded with epoxy and 4 lag bolts per side. So far it looks good after about 150 hrs. Henry Henry

Much more than new mounts!

I have the larger 2QM15 engine in my 1980 Hunter 30 and recently had my mounts changed. Apparently the factory only approximately centered the shaft in the stern tube and so it is not uncommon for the shaft to rub after a few years. I had a two year problem with realignment after new mounts because the shaft strut also had to be realigned so the shaft would be centered in the stern tube. The mechanic had to add substantial shims under the rear engine mounts to get a new and proper alignment. Check the whole system and make sure that the shaft rotates freely before you sign off or pay for on any work.
