h30 mainsheet arrangement

I recently bought an 81 Hunter 30 (Cherubini design) and have a problem with the mainsheet arrangement. It is obviously a rerig job and does not work well at all - too much friction, not enough purchase, etc. Can any h30 owner out there send me a photo or diagram of the original mainsheet rigging arrangement, or an alternative that works well? Or perhaps a photo of similar rigging on similar Hunter models? Thanks, Dave...

What is yours?

Not sure when the Cherubinis went to a cabin top traveler. My '79 H37C is on the bridgedeck and I like it there. The mainsheet used to go forward under the boom, down to a turning block, through a deck organizer and back to a winch. I found I had little control. I bought new Garhauer fiddle blocks, one with a cam cleat, and now keep everything at the boom-end. I inserted smaller blocks in between and I have excellent 6:1 control. That's my preference but most H37Cs have been converted to cabin top and mid-boom. Do not know how they get enough purchase and fine tune.

mainsheet

Ed, my present rig attaches to the cabin top, just forward of the companionway. I don't think moving it anywhere else is an option, given the bimini arrangement. You have given me an idea though. With the present rig, I have 4:1 purchase at the 2/3 point on the boom, and the sheet then goes to a single block at the base of the mast, then across the cabin top to a turning block, and then back to a cleat on the left side of the companion way. There is a lot of friction in the points where the sheet turns, so it binds up a lot. But, if I changed the block at the top of the cabin to one with an integral cleat, all the changes in direction would go away. No longer would I have to snake the line forward and then aft to get to a remote cleat. Thanks for the idea. Next trip to the coast will include a visit to WestMarine. Dave...

Sounds OK, but . . .

an electric winch would also work. :) Not sure I totally understand. You mean to put a block with a cam cleat at the base of the mast? I am interested in case I ever move my traveler to the coach roof. My only reason for doing that would be to allow for a larger dodger that can attach to the bimini.

I have an 81 H30 with the original setup

Hi Dave, I have the original setup. I am about to upgrade it, but I took a series of photos so that the guy at Garhaurer Marine could see what I had and what I wanted to do. I will be happy to email you the photos if you wish. You can email me at sfsound@exis.net . The original mainsheet setup has a problem in that it terminates to a stand up pully on the port cabin top. With this setup the mainsheet will pull the boom to port when close hauled, thus you cannot point as high on starboard tack as you can on port tack. It becomes annoying very quickly as it is a noticable difference. Send me an email, and I will send you the photos. Fred
