'Bout Time ('82 H30) came with a 155 genny on a roller furler... After 5 years with it, I'll probably never own another 155...but I digress...

What do you have as a headsail(s) for your H30? Do you like it? Have you had other headsails you didn't like as well? What are the average conditions you sail in?

Originally was 110 along with a storm jib. Now it is a 130 on a roller furler. More power and much easier to handle.

I have a big 'ol lapper, probably a 155. Here in San Diego we seldom see winds over 15 knots, so one pretty much needs the big headsail. Kind of a pain to tack (my new self-tailing winches help a lot!), but keeps the boat moving nicely in our typical 10 to 12.

I have a 135 on a roller furling. Makes the boat much more manageable when single handing than the old 155.

....and, I don't see much (if any) decreased performance under any conditions when I furl the 155 down to about 120 to 130...it almost appears to point higher...

Have a 150 wire luff on an ancient Schaefer furler. Just bought a Profurl B29L and debating on converting my old 150 to luff tape. I most likely will bite the bullet and find a new 135.

My 155 is on a old Hood Seafurl2 .... will go to a 130 and probably upgrade the furler when the time comes.

I'm even toying with maybe something like a 110 to 120 ... curious if anyone has experience/educated guess with the 'average performance lost' on a 30' keelboat going from 130 to 110/120 on the genny.

Thoughts?

Cruising spinnaker?

We have a 110 on a roller and an asymmetric spinnaker in a sock. The asymmetric outperforms a big genny once we are reaching anywhere below 65 degrees off the absolute wind. A 155 is for sailing hard on the wind in light winds, or with lots of rail meat in a moderate wind. They are a must have for racing, but I question their use on any leg off the wind.

It's easy to roll up our 110. Hoist the asymmetric, and raise the sock when winds are light. Going back to the 110 if afternoon winds build over 15 knots is just as easy.

By the way we also have a 130 that we only use if we have a long leg (for instance across Lake Erie) in light winds. That happens less than once per year!

Oh, yeah, we have an h27, but I think (based on substantial experience on an h30) the point still holds.
