I just purchased a 1978 Hunter h30. One of the things that needed to be done was to clean the running rigging(gray, green, black, ugh). I attached messenger lines and cleaned the lines. While reinstalling, as luck would have it, a couple of the messengers detached. The PO couldn't help me and other pseudo experts proved to know no more than I do. They were guessing just like me. Are there any real manuals that address things like running rigging and such for the 1978 Hunters?

H30 help? Doubt it.

The previous owners and myself have all the possible documentation for my 1979 Cherubini(H37C). I can tell you that for my boat nothing is available to explain reinstalling running rigging. Are we talking about the mast or the boom? I'll guess mast.

Can we assume the mast is stepped, not off the boat and horizontal? Then there are not many choices, someone has to be at the top. The boatyard that I just left had a cherry picker for that purpose. Or you can go up or have someone go up.

Are there any halyards still in the mast? You could use one to drag two messenger lines up, one for the missing halyard and one to pull the other halyard back down. Still someone has to be at the top to move the new messenger line to the proper sheave.

If not then once up there drop a small messenger line over the sheave with a small weight. Then you will have to have a small wire hook, a large paperclip will work. Reach in through the exit plate and fish around for that line and pull it out. You might have to rock the boat and get the line moving around in the mast in order to hook it. Good luck.

Ed, I am addressing the boom. unlike the mast there are routings and sheaves and such that need to be properly strung. Very confusing at a glance. Any suggestions are welcome.

Boom routing

If your boom is like my '33 there are three sheaves at each end. The center is for the outhaul for the main sail. The side sheaves/lines can be used for reefing lines. Or, if you wish for a toping lift attachment line.
