Hello, I am dry hauling in a couple weeks and wish to make a press with threaded rod for the Cutlass bearing. Or Slide Hammer I think would be the better term. Can anyone tell me the outside diameter of the Cutlass bearing, for $50,000 in your free trip to Hawaii? Approximately how thick (o.d.-i.d.) is the metal portion of a Cutlass bearing?

What you are looking for is a press. A hammer may destroy the bond of the strut to the hull. See here.

I agree…a slide hammer can also damage your transmission.

I would guess a 30’ boat has a 1” shaft…but that is just a guess.

my O’Day 322 uses this bearing…

For your press, you mightget away with a slightly too small OD, but you cannot be too large (or it won’t fit in the strut).

Here is how I did it…

My brother-in-law made the plates and collets for me.

Good luck,

send those tix to Hawaii

OP mentions H30 in the title… despite that his avatar info says H43…I went with the title boat.

The strut is already broken from the idiot owner oh, for the first time in his life, allowing a line to get caught in the propeller haha.

The shaft would be removed and the strut is already broken so it will be clamped in a vise. Either press or Slide Hammer I need to know exact diameter as the factory Cutlass bearing

If the shaft is out, it is pretty easy to cut the cutlass bearing with a hacksaw blade, then pry it out of the strut. No need for a press or slide hammer. The press is generally used when you don’t want to remove the shaft, so the collets are used to push the bearing out.

And if the strut is broken, why bother removing the bearing? Or are you going to fix and reuse the strut?

OK, Now that I know, the OD of the prop shaft on a Hunter 30 C from 78 - 83 is 1 inch.
You should be able to get one from a supplier with that spec.
