H290: Reef Lines set-up

Hi Folks
New comer here - moved up to a 2000 Hunter 290 (bought last fall, just getting in the water now). I'm quick to ask for help so this will be the first of many questions asked this year!

I do have a complete owners manual, but I don't always feel its as detailed and exact as I would like it to be.

The owners manual (pic attached) shows Reef #1 (starboard, green) passing through and securing through a slit just forward of the clew - it then just states that "Reef #2 runs the same as Reef #1". My Hunter Sack Pack style sail cover has 2 slits built into it for the 2 reef lines - BUT the sail only has 1 slit - DO BOTH REEF LINES PASS THROUGH THE SAME SLIT ?

OR does Reef #1 pass Aft of the slit and only Reef #2 uses the slit in the sail? ...after the boat was delivered to me last fall I took some pics before taking the sails off for cleaning/repairs, the previous owner looks like they put Reef #1 aft of the slit and only used the slit in the sail for Reef #2 (attached pic)

Thanks ahead of time for your suggestions
-Ray

Mine has 2 slit on the cover. One for each. If you put both into that 1 slit, would the Reef#1 block the foot when you tighten out-haul? Might be better to tailor another slit on the cover for Reef#2.

Hi Ken and thanks for the reply!
My sail cover DOES have the 2 slots built in it (you can almost see both in my poor pic above!) .... my question is regarding the sail, I only have 1 slot in the sail (which you can see in the pic), the previous owner put the second reef (red) through that slot and the first reef (green) aft the slot (under the sail between the slot and the clew), my question is: is the way the previous owner rigged the lines correct (which doesn't quite fit with what the owners manual says)
please reply back
thanks, Ray :)

I think that the slit is in the sail for reef 1 due to the sail being held into the boom by a short piece of sail tape. If the sail tack was held to the boom by a slug it would not be necessary for the slit as the reef line would pass under the loose footed sail. The second reef gets tied to the boom under the sail, in line with the second reef eye. This probably lines up with the opening in the sail cover. I would say that the PO had it correct.

Jake is right. The end of sail is where Reef#1 tie off should be.
