I am wondering if anyone has a used dodger for a Hunter 28. I' like to find one and also wonder how much a dodger would affect forward vision, access to the side decks, and if users like them even when the weather warms up.

If you are having a dodger made, I would suggest that you have all of the panels removable for summer. This will still provide some shade (when applicable). Generally it is nice to have side and rear grab bars. The side ones are handy when going forward or returning to the cockpit.

Do some of your own research on the type of material that you may want to use for windows.

You may also want to consider a fly that can zip to the trailing edge of the dodger for shade when you are at anchor if you don't have a bimini.

A low cost option (~$1000) is to purchase one from JSI in St. Petersburg., FL, telephone 1-800-652-4914, www.newjsi.com/contact.aspx. They make the frames in City Island, New York and canvas in Florida. I recommend marine polycarbonate or Lexan windows, snap fasteners in front of the traveler and padded canvas covers to avoid scratching the windows. Side windows option does not seem to add any value. They can provide zippered sections as Steve recommends. I purchased one and installed it on a 1987 Hunter 31 a year and one-half ago and can offer installation assistance and photos of the Hunter 31 as installed.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. There a lot of details to consider. I already have a Bimini so my main focus with a dodger would be keeping warm during the coldest months of the year. is it practical to think I will remove it in the spring and summer months?

If you have it designed properly, they can build a connector piece between the bimini & the dodger. Then you remove the windows and you have a "larger" bimini. It also keeps the sun out of the interior during the hot summer months.
