I need help in finding a fuel tank to replace my old plastic tank.
I have been finding fuel in the bilge. Looks to be coming under liner and then entering bilge at the keel bolt. I traced the fuel lines and can not find a leak from them. After setting for a week, I removed about 16 ounces from bilge. Of the 16 ounces, only 4 onces was water. I have the bilge pump turn off. I have drained the fuel from tank and next is to remove.
Before draining the tank, I ran the engine and it runs good and found no leaks at the fuel lines. The previous owner did have a fuel filter leak and replaced housing. Could the fuel I keep pulling from the bilge be from fuel trapped under the liner that is slowly finding its way to the bilge?

Several years ago I had issues with the fuel tank on my 85 28.5 with water getting into the fuel. I determined that it was most probably due to the muffler being in the "other half of the chamber" . I set up a temporary solution with a separate 6 gallon diesel tank that I placed on top of the original fuel tank, in front of the hot water heater. This solution worked very well and it solved the problem. I could not find a tank that would fit the dimensions of the original and decided to epoxy a couple of wooden tabs to the bottom of the storage locker and installed a 12 gallon tank I found at Defender. I routed all of the appropriate lines ( fill, overflow & fuel to engine) added two straps to the epoxied wooden tabs. This solution does limit the locker space, but it also keeps me from dragging around too much stuff when We sail. This solution worked for me, don't know if it would work for you. One major benefit is I always can determine the fuel level simply by opening the locker.

Rich,
Thank you for your reply. My muffler is separate from the fuel tank. I have a round muffler, not sure if it is the original or not. The fuel tank is plastic and appears to be original.

Apparently Hunter changed the design between 1985 & 1988. If you have access to the tank I still suggest you measure it and look at Defender Marine for fuel tanks. They have a variety of tanks that just may meet your needs. Good Luck.
