Have a 1976 H27 "BULLFROG" and want to change from stick to wheel steering. Anyone know where used 18" wheel assembly can be found or new wheel setup? Websites or dealerships locations? Thanx for any help!

Wheel steering for H-27

Wayne, I commented on this issue a few weeks back. The post may still be in the archives (if you can find it). The two big problems with the early 27s are the traveller placement and the selection of wheel helm gear. I contacted Edson about the latter and they sent me a very nice application guide showing the H-27 fitted with a rack-and-pinion wheel, mounted over the so-called lazzarette ('ice box') in a beautiful wooden box. The system is Edson part no. 344. The rig is not cheap ($800?) but has many advantages, not the least of which is that it saves a lot of cockpit room. The helmsman can sit in the aft corner out of the way or straddle the wheel box for good visibility, especially whilst motoring. It looks more yachtlike than a cheesy little 18-in wheel in the centre of a decent cockpit. It is more reliable, having no cable to jump off the track and therefore needing no emergency tiller. I would advocate this system for anyone with an H-27– in fact in shopping for one of these boats myself I do not look at pedestal-equipped boats because I'd prefer the more intelligent solution (which I'll probably have to install myself, but that's not that hard either). Contact Edson directly at info@edsonintl.com. –and tell them I referred you! :) By the way any used gear you'd get would probably be worthless anyway. Why is it available used if it isn't junk or just ill-suited to the application? Let me know how you think on this issue. J Cherubini II Cherubini Art & Nautical Design Org. JComet@aol.com
