I'm in the process of replacing the steering cable on our 1981 Hunter 27.

I've removed the old (and frayed:eek:) one but before I go about getting a replacement length of cable to attach to the chain, I'm just wondering if the cable needs to be of a specific type? It appears to be 3/16" in diameter, twisted strands now....

Direction / particulars appreciated.

There are two ways to due it. You can call EDSON in New Bedford, Ma and order exact replacement parts.

You could take the cables to a rigger and he could duplicate them for you. I replaced mine with a local rigging shop and the difference in price between the rigging shop and EDSON was negligable. Just make sure you get SS wire. Good luck.

Re: Steering cable

Ok thanks...I suspected stainless steel but don't know if there are different strengths etc. Good idea re a rigging shop - I'll start there.

Steering Cable Replacement

You might not have a Edson. Your boat might have a Yacht Specialties Pedestal. Possibly the cable is the same, but you should be sure of what make pedestal you actually have installed on the boat.

My 1982 Hunter 27 has a Merriman pedestal. I installed a replacement
cable and chain unit from Edson several years ago. It fit perfectly.
