I have noticed as I hoist the sail if I am not careful the line coming onto the winch rolls over the first wrap of line already on the winch, causing a very tight knot. The only thing I see as the issue is that the winch seems to be a little low in respect to the line wrapping on it. both the line clutch and winch are original so I can't figure out how that can be. anyone had a situation like this?

I realize this is a confusing post...I am not at the boat and cant take a pic to show.

Harken says it best.

The most important factor is to ensure a proper line entry angle. Lines must lead up to a winch at about a 5-to-8-degree angle to prevent overrides of the sheet on the drum. If lead blocks are too high to allow this angle up to the drum, the winch must be raised slightly, or you will have serious problems preventing overrides

Harken off...

Overrides can be very nasty. Unless you can get a rolling hitch onto the line to unload it, often the only choice can be to cut it.

I normally take 3 wraps on the winch and then tail the exit line with the other hand. Tailing allows you to direct the exit position of the line away from the entering angle of the line as Jackdaw has shown. This spreads the line on the winch barrel and will prevent overrides.

I am also new to winch use, and have experienced the same issues. Thanks so much for the diagram and the advice. I will be putting it to use in 8 weeks!

Mike on the h27 you should be able to pull the mainsail up without the assistance of the winch. Get it up there and then give it a couple of wraps around the winch just to tighten it. I think it is the lack of enough tension from the weight and friction of the main that causes the overrides. The winches are there to be used when needed and not necessarily to be used everytime.

I generally don't use the winch except to tighten up the halyard when I get the sail up to the top. But even a few wraps and a couple cranks and it overrides. I will have to look at where the line hits when it starts wrapping, After the snow melts that is! Thanks!
