Below is a picture of the original ( I think) Automatic Batter charger... also it has one lead for Ac plug..

I have a 35 amp Hitachi alternator and I need to replace this item .. the Ac side works but do-sent charge batteries any longer...

If any one can help me with that item I am looking for.. whats it called maybe the largest size I can use.. for 1gm alternator..35 am... I am looking to have four ac plugs in my boat.. (not for use at one time).

Thank you very much

Well to begin with the alternator and inverter charger don't really have anything to do with each other.
The real questions to size an inverter/charger are:
what AC and DC appliances do you use at the dock? charger for sure, water heater?, reefer? etc
What is the size of your house bank and starter battery?
Do you live aboard, weekend sailor, daysailor, how do you use the boat?

The best size alternator for the 1GM is the 35A unit that the manufacturer installs. The engine does not have much horsepower to give up and would suffer in its performance to drive the boat if you were to use a larger unit. Under certain conditions, perhaps in a lake where tides and currents might not be a factor you might go up to a 55A unit should you have a need for it. Unless you plan to add refrigeration to the boat I would not worry about it. Your inboard charger is not original as these boats were not equipped with one. You can replace it with a 10A plug in for around $100. To set your mind at ease conduct an "energy survey" of how many amps you may use in a 24 hour period and estimate your opportunities to recharge. This will help to size your battery bank which in turn will dictate the adequacy of the alternator and inboard charger size. In a boat without refrigeration and heavy electrical loads you should not use more than 15Ah in a day. Your alternator should be good to manage that.
