The title says it all--has anyone tried their backup tiller (on the older 27)? Or have you come up with a better one? Thanks!

It Happens!!!!!!

My "emergency" or "back up" tiller in now in a place of honor under the port cockpit seatand readly acessable on my '85 Hunter 31'. I had heard of other members of my Club having a similar experince but, more importantly,I personally experienced a 2:30 AM break in the Edsel steering cable on a friend's15 year old boat while we were under sail. Fortunatly, he was well prepared. Since then, I retrieved the "back up tiller" buryed under the many lines in my stern lazarette, and put it in a place of "immediate access". Experience is the best teacher!!! Yes I have tried it and it works!!!!

No problem?

We have an 82' 27', I have tried the emergency tiller incsae I ever have to rely on it. It works fine, there is very little leverage in it's length but it is perfectly usable.

Carved my owm

I carved my own from a solid piece of teak, installed the attached hardware for Autohelm and had a stainless bracket for the post made up. I made the helm about 30cm long. I have a 1978 Hunter 27' and usually sail solo. I have all the controls at my fingertips and still get to look ahead.
