Can anybody tell me how I can examine the chainplates on my 1981 Hunter 27? Do I need to cut away anything to get access? Also, I would appreciate any details on how the chainplates are secured. thanks

a closer look reveals

If its like my 82 a closer look reveals a gap between the headliner "pan" and the floor liner "pan" up in the corner above the settees. You cannot see this gap without getting in for a close look as it is nicely hidden by a lip molded into the headliner "pan." Looking up into the gap between the liner pans reveals the bottom of the throughbolts for chainplates, stanchions, and the screws going through the toe rail, deck, and into the hull. chris

Chris is right

The h27 chainplates are simply u-bolts fastened with nuts/washers through the toerail and hull-deck joint. The uppers are in the head, and the lowers forward and aft of it. I can reach most of the nuts with a deep socket wrench using an extension. On some of the chainplate/u-bolts, The bolt is so long, I'm going to have to find another approach to tighten the nut. Luckily, the u-bolts still seem tight. I have to tighten all the nuts in the fall and spring to prevent or reduce leaks through the seam. David Lady Lillie

Toe rail strong enough?

Yes, the shrounds are attached to u-bolts in the toe rails. I was wondering what if that's all there is. Are they reinforced in any way or is it just the toe rail holding them down?
