Bought the Hunter 260 w/o a trailer and found what I believe will be a good replacement. Not bunks as is typical from a stock magic-tilt trailer but maybe better?? This one's a much heavier trailer but with multiple rollers that adjust as the boat rolls/floats on. Any thoughts/input would be good. I could just tear everything off and fabricate bunks similar to a stock one but maybe if money weren't the issue when selling the boat new Hunter might have supplied one overdesigned/similar to this one?? weigh in. ~~_/)~~ Michael the fleet lord:)

I'd Get WIth Crazy Dave on This One

My suspicion though is there is not enough surface area on the rollers to support the weight of the boat with the ballst tanks full.

always wanted to to do that

I always wanted to do that to my trailer. If its not to much trouble would you mind posting on how it works out long term? I was always concerned about the small surface area as well, which is why I havent dont it yet. Anyway good luck with mods Brad s/v Kivalo

Don't think I would

The bunks on the "Hunter 260" trailer are fairly substantial spreading the pressure of the beds over a very large area. You may have already checked but if you have not see if you can find one. You will be supprised.

Bunks

Maybe a combination of bunks and rollers would be a better solution.

H26 Trailer Replacement

My $.02: I think you'll end up with dimples on the hull - Hunter choose bunks as opposed to rollers for a reason probably not related to cost. Check my website on this issue: http://kobernus.com/hunter260/trailer1/trailer1.html

Keel Clearance

From the picture, it doeasn't appear that the boat is going to be high enough to allow for the keel to clear the trailer frame and axles. In its up position, the keel sits about 10 inches below the hull. Fair winds and roads, Tom

Not a project for the average guy

Well, I've come a long way in a few days and just about decided it will be easier to just strip off the rollers and put float-on bunks on it. The roller heights were a little too low and aligning the keel while afloat with the narrow opening at the trailer tail seemed impractical in anything except perfect weather cond. I've prepped and adjusted everything except the bunks(new brakes/tongue ext/elec winch/rollers) so I'll keep posting as it comes together. In retrospect, I found a great used trailer very cheap. I have the means and ability to fabricate about anything, but this project is not for the average weekender fixit guy. I'll have saved over $4,000 from the cost of a new one so I'm satisfied. Work to earn more dough vs turn wrenches at home. I'd really rather be sailing. Michael

Don't give up on the extension yet

It is only flexing because the square tubing that the trailer manufacturer used was probably the thin wall stuff (1/8" or 3/16") My 23.5 trailer extension flexes a little too. If you buy a new square tube that is 1/4" wall or thicker it should not flex. Just a thought.

Retrofit compromises

Jonathan The trailer is a retro fit from another application and there was no factory extension. I had a piece of heavy 2" galv pipe that I had hoped would tolerate a 3' extension and still support the tongue weight. Now well bent. That battle I didn't win. I had looked into alternative launching techniques and will be(at least temp) going with a strap launch useing the spare tire as a tongue wheel and have a spare hub at the same time. Heres a link to a nicely done website and wheel app. at www.knottycat.com (see modifications link). George'll like this site with lots of other nice boat mods. Thanks and Aloha to all. Michael

Strap Launch

The ramp I use has a gradual slope, so I use a 20 foot chain from hitch to trailer to back the trailer in. Works well, but I'm on my third trailer wheel Jack. I've twice bought the biggest replacement I could find. The most recent one is a 1500 lb rated Bass Pro. http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catalog.TextId?hvarTextId=53506&hvarTarget=search&cmCat=SearchResults I like the Spare wheel idea. Fair winds (and roads), Tom
