Overall I love my Hunter 260. Problem is that it's tender and when there is a gust, the boat rounds up immediately. If wind it +10Knots seems to overpower my ST2000 autopilot. Has anyone installed a topside traveller to spill of some of that wind?

installed by the previous owner. It lays right at the base of the companionway (on the deck). I generally adjust for gusts with the mainsheet and make longer term adjustments with the traveler. Not sure if this is "right" or not.... BillP.

How did it work? Have any pictures? If I'm at the helm I usually use the mainsheet, but I have an ST2000 auto tiller which can't handle any gusts over 15knts.

My opinion: You are looking for a way to efficiently spill wind during gusts. I'm not sure a traveler would help much and you'll probably be stumbling over it all the time. I also find that reefing early and trimming for gusty conditions greatly reduces the tendency of the boat to weather up. Also, I want the mainsheet where I can easily tend it, especially when singlehanded. When the wind comes up I attach the bottom mainsheet block to the rudder post - that way it's easy to anticipate gusts and quickly adjust the main. Give it a try. Traveller topside not cockpit

George, I have an older H26, so I have the tiller model. As far as the traveller, I was thinking about putting it topside instead of in the cockpit ( I agree I don't want to be stumbling over it all day). I am going to order a new sail w/ 2 reefing points. I went to your web site, what about this aftermarket rudder company? Is the rudder you ordered retractable vertically instead of the backbreaking H26 rudder (retracts like a big pocket knife)?

Traveler on H26

Re Travelers in general. A useful device when working in performance margins, but there must be a reason Hunter left it off the H26/260. Let us know how it works out. The IdaSailor rudder is a direct replacement for the stock rudder and works the same.

play the mainsheet like a violin on H26

and you won't round up except in extreme conditions when you shouldn't be out anyway. I race and I tell all my main trimmers to let it out and in ASAP. You have to sail the boat according to its inanimate characteristics. We did well this racing season. nelson
