H260 Rudder Question

Anyone have any idea why the H260 rudder is designed to float. Prior to owning my H260, I spent the last twenty five years on a Hobie 16. The Hobie rudder is a solid piece of plastic, extremely hydrodynamic, and although you have to lock in the down position its doesn't float and gravity kind of helps you.

modify it! 260 rudders seem to be somewhat better than my 26's though. Just drilled through the plates and rudder to place a sheer pin to stop it from creaping up. alanP.S. Just go back from Ocean Bay Park, Docked at Flynns, rode a folding bike I keep on the boat to Ocean Beach.

Its great

There has been many many postings on this subject and most are critical of the design etc.What we do is not only tighten up the "wing nut" but when we know that we are sailing in deep water we also tie off the rope by which you pull down the rudder.The great thing about it floaating is that when we enter shallow water we simply release the rope and loosen the "wing nut" and up the rudder comes to the horizontal position, perfect for motoring. Don't have to then worry about it dragging.regards from the wild west.
