Dear Fellow Trailer Sailors: I have spent the past few months trying to think of the perfect tow vehicle for an H260. The hypothetical application would be a round trip from New York to Florida with four pasengers and supplies for a two week sailing adventure. My choice of the perfect tow vehicle would be a Ford Excursion, 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel, Non 4 Wheel Drive, 3.73:1 axle ratio and the largest set of tires that I could get on it (no dualies). Anyone have any better thoughts or suggestions?

Charter and save yourself some money!

Robert: You will be money ahead if you charter a boat down there.

Excursion is a good choise

I towed my new H260 from NC to MD using an Excursion and it was an easy drive home. Going down, I was even in the tail end of a hurricane. The Excursion is so heavy and with the big engine, you don't even know your pulling anything. Just take your time, make wide turns and stay on the main highways. In NC, to get to the interstate I had to ride on some country roads and I didn't fit! Fortunately I only passed one or two other cars.

Durango is my choice...

I tow my '94 H26 with a Dodge Durango with no problems. Four passengers allows the third seat folded down for plenty of storage in the vehicle. I live in Chicago, bought the boat in NJ and towed it back through rain and snow without a hitch. Actually, yes I had a hitch - it's just an expression :) I've since taken it to Michigan, Tennessee, Ohio, etc. We normally have 6 passengers. My Durango has the 5.9 with transmission cooler and towing package. I do have 4wd, but don't use it towing, and have never needed it at the ramp. It also fits in my garage and pocketbook, unlike an Expedition. YMMV - T J

Pick-up might be cheaper

I'd take a look at a Ford 3/4 ton crew cab with tow pack.Look for a "work truck" and get fewer frills.

Diesel, if possible

I agree with Dick. Get a pickup with diesel, either a Ford or Dodge.

Excursion work for me.

I tow my H260 with an Excursion with the V10 gas option. Sometimes I have a total of 6 people. The H260 is about half of the towing capacity of the Excursion, so it has no problem towing. I have been on a couple of very slick boat ramps where the 4X4 has paid for itself. I get more use from the Excursion when not towing than I would from a truck (I need to haul more people). I think Ford has announced they will discontinue the Excursion (I think after the 2004 model).

Save some $$$

Buy a used H260, leave it in Florida and fly down. It'd be cheaper, faster, safer. Anything to get more sailing time! Ken S/V WouffHong
