From last September, I placed a warning on the group about checking your motor mounts for bending and twisting. Hunter sent me another pair and using the old ones for the needed steel, a friend with all of the right equipment just welded them today. I've placed pictures in the Photo Forum so everyone can see what was done. Part of this racing group has a big time marine engineer and he provided the advice on were to place the welds. He also told me that if the continues to bend they will place piceces on the ends as butt joints. Jim S/V Java

Why paint them?

Jim: These mounts look like they should do the job. You mentioned that you are going to PAINT them. If you take them to a shop that deals with S.S. they can polish them. Maybe the guy that welded them can show you how to do it too.

Motor Mounts

Jim, My motor mounts are bent even worse than the pictures of yours in the photo forum. The bending is mostly at the top and bottom of the mounts, I am not sure that welding the piece of steel in the middle would do much to strengthen my brackets since there is minimal distortion in the center. Like you, I have obtained a new set of brackets from Hunter that I intend to strengthen. One problem in redesigning them is to allow the nuts and bolts to be installed and tightened while adding additional strengthening metal. I plan on pulling my boat out of the slip and taking it home for a few weeks in March. My initial thought is to straighten the old brackets and use the new and old bracket together to form a double bracket in a "tube-like" fashion to increase the strength. Any thoughts or comments? Bernie
