H260 Hatchboards

So my supposedly intelligent 22 year old son took a couple friends out on the 260 and somehow managed to dump the bottom two companionway boards into Lake Champlain.

Don't ask me how. I didn't want to know.

Anyway, so since I really don't want to fork over for one of those fancy-shmancy companionway doors (keeping Mr. Brilliant in college runs into money) I'm loking at two options:

Find someone who has their hatch boards lying around in the garage someplace because they replaced them with one of those $700 doors OR

Figure out what the dimensions of the two lost boards were and replace them with a hunk of teak and a hunk of smoked Lexan.

So if you a) have some hatch borads you'd like to off-load or b) are willing to run out to your 260 with a tape measure, I'd very much appreciate hearing from you.

My son would appreciate it too since I might start talking to him again.

Thanks

I'll try to remember to get dimensions to you within the next few days, but the way I'd handle this is to cut some heavy cardboard templates to fit the space then use the templates as a basis for making the hatchboards.

Contact me through my website http://h260.com and I'll get back to you on this.

Just Use the Lexan

Cut a template out of plywood take it to a glass place they can cut the lexan for you. You can use the template as a temporary hatch board and give the lew hatch boards to your son for Christmas.

When I complain about things like this to my mother she laughs at me and says it is payback for the things I did, only I don't remember doing anything I did to make her think so. Must have been one of my siblings.

Sorry, I can't help out with the hatchboards, but I can comiserate. A couple weeks ago my 22 year old son took his girlfriend for a sail on our 23.5. When he got back he said that he had had a bit of trouble getting back into dock, as the wind blew him past our slip, but with the help of some kind souls at the marina, he was able to get a line and get into the slip.

The following week I learned from our neighbor in the marina that my son had the boat pinned to the seawall at the end of the fairway.

A few days after that, my 18 year old son asked if I could drop the boat keys off at his dorm, which is about half way between home and the marina, so that he could take his girlfriend sailing. I was happy when I checked the weather forcast and told him that they were forcasting severe thunderstorms, so no, he couldn't have the boat.

I think it's time for a few more sailing lessons.

Good luck with that. If there's one thing I've learned it's that the last person on Earth who can teach a kid anything is the old man. Somehow, we're just too painfully stupid to have anything much of value to say.

Then again, I've always said that it was shocking how much smarter my father got as I got older. Quite amazing, really.

There are Three Stages of Life

1. My Daddy knows everything
2. My Old Man don't know nothing
3. Well, you know, my Dad always said...

This last weekend I took the boat out when I brought it back I snapped pictures of the boards and took measurements. This is the first picture of the two lower boards. I'll get the others done in the next couple days.

George, I don't know if the h260 website has these dimensions but you're welcome to copy them.

The dimensions for the lower board are: 25" bottom width, 28 3/4" top width, 11 3/8" center height. Left side top "offset" 1 1/2" (about 7.5 degrees), right side top offset 3" (about 15 degrees).

The dimensions for the upper board are: 28 3/4" bottom width, 30 3/4" top width, 6 1/2" center height. Left side top "offset" 7/8" (about 7.5 degrees), right side top offset 1 3/4" (about 15 degrees).

Here are the other two hatchboard dimensions (the top two boards).

The dimensions for the lower board are: 18 3/4" bottom width, 22 3/4" top width, 11 3/8" center height. Left side top "offset" 1 1/8" (about 7 degrees), right side top offset 3 1/8" (about 15 degrees).

The dimensions for the upper board are: 22 3/4" bottom width, 25" top width, 6 3/8" center height. Left side top "offset" 5/8" (about 7 degrees), right side top offset 1 3/4" (about 15 degrees).

I know, the heights of the plexiglass pieces should be the same, and so should the offsets; and the heights of the wood boards should be the same and so should the offsets. Mine aren't for some reason.

Any call on the angle to the top and bottom cuts? Are those measurements "long-to-long"?

Help me understand your question Dave. Do you mean the vertical angles on the sides of the boards, or do you mean the front to back bevel angles between the boards?

Yes, the measurements are long-to-long because I figured people would cut the boards with a perpendicular saw, then bevel the tops and bottoms to fit.

I've done the calculations and edited my previous posts to include the angles.
