I am thinking of replacing my main sheet, Hunter 26 spec and existing sheet is 70 feet, this is too long, it seems 50 ft is adequate. Mine is 4:1 and I use the second ring from the end to clear bimini.Am I missing anything in my analysis?
While I haven't measured mine, I'll assume it is as shipped from the factory. One thing I find handy is that during mast stepping, I have occasionally done it alone and appreciate the tail of the mainsheet tackle reaching back to the cockpit so that I can push the mast up the first few degrees with one hand and haul in on the mainsheet tackle with the other. 20 feet less and this wouldn't be possible.
The longer mainsheet length is needed for mast raising and lowering if done by instructions in the H26 Owners Manual. There is some info on mainsheet length and this subject in the archives. A previous owner of my H-26 added a traveler for the mainsheet on the "threshold" of the companionway. This new attachment point for the mainsheet tackle helped considerably on bimini clearance (and sail trim). BrianW
I guess I will go with 56 feet, As far as mast raising/lowering goes, the existing 70 feet is too long for that also.I only raise once and lower once per season, and will save the old sheet for that purpose, just in case I need more than 56 feet, which I doubt.
