h26 Spreader Tip Question

I've just repaced my upper sidestays due to unravelling of the stainless strands that was occurring at the spreader tips. Apparently the U-fitting that holds the sidestay to the spreader was too tight and, over time, turnbuckle adjustments caused the cable to unravel. My question: how tight should the stays be at the spreader tip? I'm assuming there should be free movement with almost no pinching. Is this correct? Thanks

Mine are tight

Tim, You've raised a good question here. I just recently had my stick down and have confirmed that the u-bolts are pretty tight (I at least can't slide the shrouds through by hand). But I'm showing no wear on either shroud. This is on a 98 H26. Hopefully someone else, like maybe Crazy Dave, can give us a better answer. Jim

Ok Tim here I go

You have a Z spar mast for the record. If you ever need parts, then contact US spars. If you need standing rigging or the stainless steel cable or upper or outer shroud, contact Jean at Seco South who made the standing rigging for Hunter Marine for a replacement. Often I found other dealers who installed those rascals incorrectly. When you get the new shroud, then you will need to pull it through the tip of the spreader. Gently have the spreader pushed up toward the top of the mast without any pressure and pull the shroud tight. At that point, then tighten the clamp just enough so that it will not severly pinch the shroud and you will be fine. if you have any other questions on this, leave your email and I will get in touch with you.
