H26 outhaul & uphaul question

Is the outhaul on the H26 a simple 1:1 purchase (I guess by definition that's no purchase)? I often wonder if I'm getting enough outhaul. Anyone ever put a block on the end of the boom to increase to 2:1? When I raise my sails I ususally end up with wrinkles that run from the mast down on a 45 degree angle towards the boom. Is this a case of the infamous shrunken bolt rope or do I just need to crank even harder on the winch? Ron Mehringer s/v Hydro-Therapy

I think a 3:1 arrangement would be simpler

Ron, I find it hard to believe you've got just a 1:1 on the outhaul. You may want to contact Hunter on that. If 1:1 is really all you get with a 26, then here's what you can do- buy 2 small blocks, 1 with becket, one smallish eye strap and about 6 ft of control wire with a small eye swaged in each end. Rig the blocks for 3:1 with a 3/8 line. Shackle the wire to the block with the becket. Remove the boom. Remove the gooseneck end-cap. Attach the block w/o becket using the eye strap to the inside bottom of the boom a few inchs from the gooseneck. Run the other end of the control wire out the back end of the boom on the middle sleeve (use existing line as messenger). attach the control wire to the sail with shackle. Run the end of the 3/8 line out the gooseneck in the normal "outhaul position. Re-attach the gooseneck cap and re-mount the boom. You gotta outhaul. Got a rivet gun? Greg H23 Faster-

shruken head?

Ron; I would think you have a shrunk bolt rope that occoured over time which takes more time than to shrink heads by the headhunters. I thought a little humor in this would be ok too. Crazy

The heart break of wrinkles and droopy booms.

Well, never had a problem with the outhaul I just leave it set. I guess you could add a winch if ya really want (don't think you would though). I also had a very wrinkled sail with a droopy boom. First I thought it was the reef line which is a little too short. But then I realized that I also suffered from Shrunken Bolt Rope Syndrome! After looking at that rediculous looking sail for several months I got my courage up today and did what others have done, cut the stiches to the rope at the clew that hold it fixed to the foot. Well, winched that mother up, sailed hard and winched it up again. The rope pulled up about four inches the wrinkles are gone along with that droopy boom. By the way using the rear docking cleats has definately made single handed sailing easier. For some reason you do not seem to have to pull as hard as when using the sheet cleats and I did not miss the winches.

Time to make the cut

OK, I've got my nerve up, so I'm gonna cut the stitching attaching that shrunken bolt rope to the sail. And Dave, humor is always OK by me ;-) Ron M s/v Hydro-Therapy

your graphics

dear ron, i like your idea; it looks good. you might try to experiment with the font a bit, but the concept looks great. i wish i could stuff with my comp. like that!! if you sail that good...

Made the cut

Cut the bolt rope stitching free of the sail (at the bottom) and now sail shape and boat speed look good.
