Tonight, as I was putting a rebuild kit in the marine head on my 95 H26, I thought others fed-up with the porta-potty hassle might be interested in this conversion. I can be done for about $500 using West Marine parts and gives you a 20 gal holding tank. We can go 7 to 9 days before marina pump outs with normal usage for the wife and I on our longer trips. Our boat has a Jabsco head and macerator pump with Y-valve. This system was designed by the previous owner and his work is truly of "craftsman caliber". It has a very easy to use cockpit pump-out port for marina use. This procedure takes less than 10 minutes. Also an aft port mounted "at sea thru hull fitting" that allows use at sea.(know all relating laws for "at sea use") I have locked out that portion of the system while sailing. I made up a $10 fitting and hose that fits this thru-hull port. When used with the macerator pump, while the boat is on the trailer, I can empty the holding tank at any RV dumping station under the boats battery alone, without any mess. The holding tank is a 20 gal unit that fits cleanly into the clothes hanging locker against the port hull wall in the head. The tank takes up the lower half of this locker. It is paneled with teak where it intrudes into the aft sleeping area under the cockpit. I takes up 8" of leg room for about 2 feet in the forward area of this bunk. You realy don't even notice it. I built 2 shelves in the upper 1/2 of the clothes locker area that was left. It works nicely for towels, clothing etc. Time to do this yourself and finish it as well as he did will probably take 40 to 60 hours part time. Less if you have experence in fabrication. It is VERY WELL worth it. If anyone is interested in this conversion please contact me thru this site by e-mail for plans and specs. Maria and I are in the site directory. Costs in the latest catolog are: Head $145, Mac pump $140, 20 gal tank $85, Hoses est $130, Thru hull fittings est $50. Without the macerator pump and using marina pump-out facilities alone would save maybe $180 with the reduced parts required. BUT... there is nothing worse than a tank of poop defying you to empty by hand.Ray BowlesS/V Speedy
