h26 battery placement

The placement of the battery on the h26 is an awkward place for servicing and leads to a balance problem on this relatively light boat. ¿Has anyone moved the battery where it is more accessible? The matter of balance may or may not make a major difference while sailing, but it makes a big difference while at the dock. With rudder in the upright position and the battery in place behind the aft bunks, the bottom of the rudder is in the water, needing to be scraped and cleaned before every sail. With the battery removed, the rudder is out of the water. ¿Have you moved your h26 battery' ¿Where? ¿How?

Moving the battery

Molly,

If you check the knowledge base, you'll find some info on moving the battery. I think George put a house battery under the rear port settee in the main cabin. I looked at doing something similar, but I'm a little spooked by running the cables (I don't like things tacked on the wall. I prefer things out of sight). Also, if you move the starting battery, you'll need to look at the size cable you use. That's a pretty long run to draw that many amps. Probably not so bad for a house battery where the draw is smaller. The cost of properly tinned #2 cable runs $3-4 foot or more and you'll need about 12 feet or more X 2.

Have you thought about balancing your boat by putting an equal amount of weight in the bow? That should do the trick.

I put mine in the port setee

in front of the bulkhead. 2 group 31 AGMs. I ran #6 cable back to the original battery location to a terminal block that ties the outboard connection, the original harness that runs to the DC panel, and my 40 amp battery charger that lives on a piece of plywood screwed to the original battery mount. The 9.9 Honda only draws about 40 amps to crank it over so #6 is plenty big enough. I ran the cable inside "raintite" waterproof flexible conduit in the bilge and sealed the ends with 4200.
