I've recently inherited the boat that I learned to sail on, 1981 Hunter 25. My dilema is that it is on the East Coast and I am on the West Coast of US. I'm looking for some thoughts on sailing a boat this size in the Santa Monica Bay area vs. selling it in the New Jersey area and (maybe) getting a larger boat in LA. Any comments would be helpful. The boat does need some cosmetic work and some need equipment (portapotti, water tank, light wiring) Thanks.

Jim, It's hard to figure out how you could get that boat to LA in any way that is economically practicable. you can purchase sound 25-27' boats here all day from $2,500 - 12,500. Mostly on the lower range. If you are in a taxable income where it makes sense, I'd strongly consider a donation to a local non-profit that will take such things. Will save you a lot of aggrevation. Short of that, offer a sales commission to the marina. It doesn't sound like something a broker would put an effort into selling, but I am often wrong, so it might be woth checking Good luck. RD

Does the boat have any sentamental value.
Does the boat mean any thing to you? If not, sell it and move on. I would keep it if it has a personal value to it you can't put a price on good memories. You could also have it trucked to you which might be expensive but if the boat is free,than you will have just that cost. Cliff

Let it go
Even though I love my '81 H25, I'd let it go in a flash if I had to move it more than a couple-hundred miles. You can sail it on the west coast, sure.... but the value of the boat, without trailer and depending on condition, is between $2500 and $7500. Sell it and buy something local. Or, follow your gut.... I guess the sentimental aspect is the only real reason I've kept it so far (six months). With that, I think that I'll have to sell it next season (it's in winter storage now). That gives me another question: how do you find the real value of the boat? Any suggestions Thanks again for the help so far. Jim B.
