Does anyone know if the steaming light on an 85 H25.5 has its own switch or does it come on when the "Mast" light or the "Running" lights are turned on. According to my boat surveyor, the Steaming light must be on when I am motoring (not Sailing) at night. So far, I have not found any switch to independantly control this light. Any hints would be appreciated.

Bow Light

Hi Mark: On my 25.5, the steaming light switch is on the fuze/switch panel centered below the companionway. It is labeled "bow light". If that doesn't turn it on you probably have a bad bulb. In a pinch, you are just under the 26-foot requirement for a steaming light and can get by with the anchor light until the steaming light is fixed. Dave Weir '85 H25.5 "Last Resort"

steaming light

My 25.5 does not have a separate switch for the steaming light. In addition, I have a wiring harness defect so I'm adding a switch to control the steaming light when I fix the wiring problem. I was unable to get my steaming light to come on so I wired it to the running lights temporarily.

72 COLREGS (navigable waterways, Federal)

"...a power driven vessel under 12 meters in length may (instead of other lights)...exhibit an all-round white light and sidelights." This means that an anchor light and red/green side lights will have you covered in international and Federal waterways under power. You should not also display display a sternlight in this case. I do not know the configuration of your mast head light. In a 26 it's two parts, Foward bulb and rear bulb. Both on is the same as an anchor/all-round white light. Foward on is a steaming light (must use separate stern light). When sailing do not use all-round light or foward steaming light, you must use red/green side lights and a stern light (at the stern, rear portion of mast head light will probably not be considered in compliance.) State requirements in non-Federal waterways may differ. Hope this helps. alan

Steaming Light

On my switch panel under the companionway turning on the mast light turns on the steaming light. The running lights turn on the red and green bow and white stern lights. I do not have a masthead anchor light. I don't ussually anchor overnight so it has not been an issue. The regs are Steaming light AND running lights on when under power. Sailing you can use a bow and stern standard lights. Masthead tri-color lights are okay but as the other post said turn off the others.
