I'm curious -- how well does the H240 point when sailing to windward? Also, what heel angle would one experience going to windward in, say, 20 knots of breeze?
It points very well. I've had several comments from other sailors about how high it points.I'm not sure about healing, I seldom have that kind of wind. I would reef the main. When the boat heals too much, it will round up into the wind.
Seems to point well compared to the other boat I sail will, sometimes better sometimes not. Never carry a knot meter, other than looking at water, so to me 20 knots I guess is starting to be a stiff breeze as the white caps have started to set in. I would have reefed and I control th heel between 25-30.
A lot of folks over estimate the wind speed and the best way to learn how to estimate it is to get an in expensive dwyer handheld wind speed insturment. I think they are about $20 last time I checked. Whitecaps start to form on open water with winds at ten knots. Between 10 and 15 knots you'll want to reef the main. At 15 to 20 knots I take in the jib and sail with just the reefed main. Usually I sail in gusty areas so that 10 knots of wind means gusts to 20. Another way to keep the reefing schedule right is to make certain the inclinometer reads less than 15 degrees. If you are heeling more than 15 degrees with this hull type you are sailing slower than you should. This boat sails best on her feet so keep the fat sides out of the water.I don't think this boat points as well as a normal sail boat with a deep fin keel. A J24 of a Capri 22 will point closer, but they need about 5 feet of water. These boats point much better than shoal draft fixed keel boats I have sailed like Compacs. This boats really shines on a downwind reach. It is also a great boat in light air. I am often sailing while others are drifting or motoring. Another great thing about the 240 and 23.5 is that the huge rudder makes it easy to come about no matter what the wind and wave conditions are.My best advice is to get a ride on one as soon as you can.
