H240 Question/Help: Synchronizing the tiller and outboard

Hi,

After the 1st outing on the Chesapeake, it became clear I need to get the outboard mechanically linked to the tiller/rudder for better control while motoring in the marina areas – especially in reverse.

I have a 1999 H240 model with a Tohatsu 8HP outboard. The outboard is set up for remote start/throttle/forward & reverse control (not steering).

Can anyone help with what I need to do/buy?

The engine should mount in the straight forward/aft position. Steering is done with the tiller/rudder not the outboard.

H240 Question/Help: Synchronizing the tiller and outboard

Yes, the engine should stay straight ahead most of the time. But in the marina when maneuvering room is tight, it really helps to have directional control with the motor too.

see the H260 set up

I'll probably do something like this, just wanted to know if any H240 sailor made the mod.

The EZ Steer on our H240

came with our boat when purchased. Looks like a very simple install process and is very simple to use. The self-adjusting feature is useless in my opinion though. We have ours locked into the length we need and when raising the outboard for sailing I unhook the rod from the tiller fitting and let it hang from the outboard with zero problems. Adds considerable maneuvering ability at slow speeds when docking.

Request for photo

Dan,

Thanks for the repy - knew there was another H240 owner with this set-up.

Any chance I can talk you into posting a pic of the tiller downshaft where the connecting rod from the outdrive mates up with?

I posted a H260 link that I found that shows what the device on a H260 tiller downshaft device looks like. I'm guessing they are the same since the diameter of the downshaft looks to be the same - your picture would probably confirm this.

Thanks
Jerry

Can Do !

We plan on heading to the lake to do some sailing this coming Sunday, she's in a marina for the season. I will snap a couple for you and post them first thing next week. I would rather send them via e-mail but for some reason the links in our profiles here are coming back as a bad link. If you can make the link work in my profile, send me your E-mail address.

Thanks, 2 questions

Dan,

Thanks for the pics, 2 questions:

1. THere is a sticker on the connecting rod, is it the name of the manufacture (looking where to get a setup like yours)?

2. Do you have to disconnect it everytime you use/store the motor?

Thanks
Jerry
