H240 Jib UV protection

I have a y2000 Hunter 240 with roller furling jib. I am wondering if the jib needs additional protection from the sun's UV. At our altitude the sun is more powerful than at sea level. The sails are by Doyle sailmakers. A local sail loft has recommended a hi tech film that they put on the foot and luff. It will cost about $240 to do it which seems an awful lot for a $400 sail. (approximate). Any opinions out there?

Check With Hunter

If you purchased the boat with the furling jib, one would assume that the sailmaker would have added the UV strip already. Check with Hunter and/or Doyle to see if this was done. There are various types of protective materials - some more expensive than others. It would seem irresponsible to put a furling jib on a boat and not have protected it. Worth checking --

RF Cover

Indeed you need a cover on that jib. Don't go with the film however. It makes a mess. There's no better protection the Sunbrella. It has a 5 year warranty from Glen Raven Mills. It will cost about $200.00 + - I'm not sure of the dimensions off hand. I'm not only a Hunter Dealer but also part of the Doyle Sailmaking group. You can send it to me to do it if you like. I can ship it back in a week for you. The other alternitive is to make a sleeve that zips all the way up. But you need to install another halyard to do it. You may contact Butch Berchem at doylenc@cs.com or 704-483-6656 I'll be glad to help you. Butch

sleeve

Thanks for your addition. I have thought of a sleeve which is not only a little cheaper (about $180) but could be used with future sails as well. Since I have a roller furler, the normal jib halyard is available for this use. Right now, that's the way I am leaning. Thanks again.

Lean the other way

I had a sleeve on my H26 Jib – it was a hassle to put up and it flapped in the wind while at dockanchor. Last year, I had a local sailmaker put white sunbrella on the jib. If your wondering how much it will take to cover, roll the jib up, and using a pencil, make small marks on what’s exposed. Make sure they sew it on the correct side. Some may say that it will effect (ruin) the shape of the sail. Perhaps in a very light wind. Otherwise, no.
