I bought a new H240 last summer. I love the boat but I have one major complaint. The two cockpit lockers get water in them and there is no drains. Why Hunter did not put drains in them to start with I do not know. Has anyone installed drains in these lockers and can you tell me how you did it. Appreciate all info, David s/v Devine Spark

Did it.

David, I wrote a rather wordy article regarding this problem back in 1998. I have tried searching the archives but it does not show up for some reason. I used three through-hulls, one in each locker for a drain, the other as an exit point mounted in the vertical face of the gas locker, directly forward of the outboard mount. I used plastic tubing and a "T" connector to plumb it all in place. The plumbing is hidden in the storage area behind the curtains in the aft berth. Now I can stow wet gear or wash the lockers without having to bail. Works great! Mark Kissel Kittiwake/H240

Weather Strip

Rainwater was the big problem and I was too lazy to put in drains. I got a roll of automotive type weather strip and fixed the back and sides but left the front open to 'breathe'. I've never had more than a teaspoon full of water even after violent rainstorms since. NOW.... about those lousy little rubber bumpers that only last a couple of months. Has anyone found a source of better bumpers? Ken S/V Wouff Hong

If you are washing the boat on the trailer..

One other little tidbit about the cockpit lockers. We were giving our 23.5 a good spring washdown. I ahd both cockpit lockers open and emptied. I had sscrubbed them out and was rinsing them clean as I washed down the boat. I would say they were both 1/2-2/3 full. My wife went to climb into the cockpit to help me bail them out. As she climbed up the transom ladder, the front of the trailer started to lift up. Now before she reads this and I get slammed into next century, why wife does not weigh 200 lbs or more. But, fresh water weighs 8 lbs per gallon, and apparently, their is more than enough volume in those tanks to throw the rig off balance. Needless to say, she hopped off the ladder before the boat took a 30 degree up angle. (sub sailors?) It's been 5 years since that afternoon, and she still get's jumpy getting on the boat when it is on the trailer. Mike Pajewski H23.5 "Summer Rental" & H26 "Loon"

Done that too, Mike.

If the tongue weight is correct, 250-300 lbs. on the swim ladder will tip the trailer/boat. I sometimes use a wood block under the rear trailer cross member to stabilize the boat. Try this, then tell the wife she must have lost some weight. She'll love you for it! Mark Kissel Kittiwake/H240

Up Angle

I am 200 (or so) pounds and what I have done when the boat is on the trailer is to put 3 or 4 2X6 squares under the aft end of the trailer before I jack the front up. Would be a very bad day indeed if the boat slid off of the trailer and on top of you. My mother in law that might be a different story I'll have to find somthing new to show her on the boat sometime. (just joking sweetheart, I really do like ypur mother)
