I have just purchased a 1988 Hunter 23 and have to go 950 miles to pick it up. It has a standard trailer that came with boat new. Does anyone know what wheel size the tires are and what the wheel bolt configuration is (eg. std. 4 bolt etc.) I have never owned a sailboat so I am excited about going after it. And ofcourse a little apprehensive pulling it that far the first time out.

My trailer

Hi Ward, and Congratulations on your new purchase! I think the 23 is a great boat, and really enjoy sailing it. I didn't have any problems towing my 23 900 miles from Ft Walton Beach, FL to Key West, but it will be slow going- I don't recommend trying to go more than about 55mph or it will start to 'fish-tail', and make steering your vehicle not much fun at all. The other piece of advice that I've seen a lot is to 1.) make sure the boat is pulled ALL THE WAY FORWARD on the trailer, and 2.) put a little extra weight up forward (like the outboard in the V-berth), to add some trailer tongue weight. This will make for smoother trailing. Oh, I suppose I could answer your real questions... I don't know the size of the tires off hand, but it's a 5-nut lug pattern. I plan on working on my boat later today, and I can send the tire size later... --Jon Bastien h23 '2 Sheets to the Wind'

Thanks Jon

Thanks for the tips Jon. I need all the help I can get. There isn't a spare for the trailer so I am trying to round one up. The current owner said the 60 was his max. speed as well. I just hope I don't get caught in a snow or ice storm on the way or I will just have to wait it out.

Tire size & trailer advice

Hi Ward, I just went and checked my trailer- My tires are BF Goodrich F78 15ST's. I don't have a spare, since it's pretty easy to find trailer tires in auto parts stores, marine stores, etc... and we have plenty of each in the areas where I trailer my boat. This may sound a little silly, but if you're going to carry a spare for your trailer, don't forget to carry a jack that will lift the trailer, and a lug wrench that will fit the lug nuts on trailer. I discovered, as I was planning to replace the brake shoes, that the lug wrench for my truck didn't fit my trailer. There has been TONS of good advice about trailering posted to these forums- everything from what kind of vehicle to use, how to secure the boat to the trailer, and checklists to driving tips. It may be worth an afternoon of browsing through the archives for some peace of mind. My most important piece of advice is, make sure you're comfortable with the idea of driving a 45-foot long, 8-foot wide vehicle that weighs in somewhere around 2-1/2 tons. Leave plenty of braking distance, plan any maneuvers WAY ahead of time, and remember to swing a little wide for your turns. If you'd like more info, you can drop me a line at jonbastien@yahoo.com or leave another post for me here- I'm always happy to help! --Jon Bastien

tire size and coincidence

Congratulations! We actually just inherited a 23.5 which is in Pensacola, FL and we had to have a custom trailer made to haul it back home here near Philadelphia which is about 1000 miles! Before we had our trailer made we called Hunter to see if we could get the factory trailer. We found out it came and does come with 15" tires (single axle). We chose not to go with the factory one, but did know the answer to your question! Good luck and have fun. Sorry, don't know about the lug nuts.

Watch out at toll booths

Ward, If you need to through any toll booths make sure you are lined up in the middle of your lane. Up here in Pa DE and NJ they are narrow with in my case H240 only have about 6"-8" on either side of tires while going through. Also, warn the toll collector to watch there heads, my first trip though a toll booth the collector was checking out my boat by sticking his head out of the booth. The roller on the port side almost hit him in head!!!!!!

Take them all out!

Don't worry about them damn toll booth collectors. There are way too many of them around as it is. We should line all them up along with the idiots who keep the tolls on the roads and bridges long after they are paid for. Sorry, this is a pet peeve of mine. I am from Texas where toll roads are a yankee commie pinko idea.

Don, You've got access to a couple of hundred 23 owners on HOW. All have experience (O-Boy). Some may be looking for buyers. Put your question out in the forum and see what you get.

Details on purchase

Don, I may not be the best person to ask because I would imagine my purchase is UNUSUAL. I bought my boat through an internet auction at Yahoo.com The only thing I had to go on for condition was several pictures and the "honesty" of the seller. I have never purchased anything on the internet so my first transaction was quite a leap. All of the pictures showed the boat to be in mint condition (1988) Trailer is in good shape and the following were included: depth sounder, loran, VHF radio, new porta-potti, main sail cover and GFI shore power panel Sail inventory was 110% jib and main in good shape. I looked at all h23s on this site and saw a range of $6,000 to $9,500. The NADA blue book listed this boat at a retail range of $7,740 to $10,950 including trailer but no other extras. Why did I take a chance on an internet auction????? I gave $4,000 for the whole thing. I figured at this price I could afford some fixing if needed. After a friend, living in the area, has looked at the boat, I got a very good deal cause he said it is just like the guy advertised. I am planning on getting it this weekend. I did look at lots of boats in Racine Wis. this past summer, but felt the brokers were a little high on what they had to offer. Good Luck
