H23 sheave woes

Greetings! I have a 1987 H23 with a Z-Spar mast. There are spaces for two sheaves to exit at the base of the mast. The single plastic sheave left at the base of the mast (starboard) is TOAST. I need to replace it (and add another) BUT I am having a devil of a time removing the axel to get the old sheave off. I used a nail like a punch and the nail bent! (I am on my way now out to buy a REAL punch.) Can anybody advise? Which way does the axel come out? (I have sprayed a bit of WD, but am considering miracle oil.) What size is the replacement sheave? TIA Richard H23 "Invictus"

Replacements

Richard, The sheave size is: 1" diameter 3/8" width 1/4" bore They have no bearing and are typically made of Acetal. A direct replacement is: Ronstan RF578 West Marine sells them for $3.19 If I remember correctly, on my Zspar, the axle shaft was knurled at on end and I drove it out from the other end using a 1/4" drift punch. NOTE: it is important to use the proper size punch if you don't want to risk mushrooming the end of your axle. ALSO: On mine, the boom sheaves were all getting bad too. The outhaul purchase is inside the boom. It all uses the same sheave size. Mine were working pretty hard and it made a BIG difference when I replace them. I belive it took 6 sheaves total. You must drill out the pop rivets in the boom if you change the outhaul sheaves. Good Luck Ward
