I'm about to purchase a 1985 Hunter 23. I have not been able to find why the forward seats in the cockpit have angle divits cut out of them. The wood trim goes across the front of the divit area and seems to form a slot, but I have no idea what it is for. Anyone know why they designed these slots or divits or whatever they're called?

I have the same, and assumed they are used to gather ropes of one sort or another. I have never confirmed this, simply my guess. I'm interested to hear from others on this.

They are put the for the sole purpose of tripping my sister-in-law when boarding our boat. Durn near broke her ankle! I've caught my foot in it, too.

when you are really heeling you can tuck your feet under there to help hold on.
they also hold beers temporarily.

They are foot braces when on serious heel
But I can barely squeeze my size 11 feet into them.
Thinking of modifying mine to Captain compatible dimensions. Cheers from the "Escape Pod"

Haha I wear a size 15! Guess I can just hook my toes under the opposite lifeline and lay back! I don't think I would want to trust my footing to a 1/4 in piece of wood anyway.

They are to mount the galley table in the cockpit. And organize halyards, and hold binoculars, and ...
