Ok, getting back into sailing after a long time. Sent the youngest son to sailing camp and he loved it, so needed to buy a boat. Ended up finding a Hunter 23 at a racehorse deal, so we got it. I'm sure this will be the first of many newbie questions so bear with me if you can.

Most of my past experience was on larger boats with post rudders and wheel steering, so kinda new to the clip on rudder thing. What holds these rudders on? When installed, they are just slipped onto the pins with nothing further to secure them? What keeps them from jumping off of the pins if the boat is pitching?

On my original rudder the gudgeons are cast aluminum & welded to the aluminum housing (for the rudder to swing). The pintles are mounted to the transom and the top pintle (pin) has a hole for a retaining clip, aka hitch pin. I was recently looking for one on-line as I thought I had lost mine. Ronstan has a clip part RF413 which looks like what I have and Schaeffer has one that looks like the more familiar trailer style hitch pin (part# 51-083 $2.35) (Note in the catalog you will only see it with the J24 pin for $53). Its a cheap part and shipping will cost more than it will. Pity West Marine doesn't carry anything like it. A SS cotter pin would work but would not be as convenient to remove. In a pinch you could use one or you can get a trailer style hitch pin from Home Depot but it wont be stainless.

There are holes in both pintles for cotter pins. I used both of them...

Be sure the bolts on the traveler are tight. Be sure everything everywhere is tight for that matter! Reef early, she is a little tender. Loved mine, sure you will too.

Should be a hole in one of the pins that a carter pin goes. That is how mine is attached, although my pins could have been changed somewhere along the line.
