I just bought a 1985 Hunter 23 and spent some time this weekend launching and cleaning her up. I have previous experience with sailing dinghies and this is my first 'real' sailboat.

As such I have lots of questions. Perhaps someone can help me out:

1) Is there a manual of some sort for this boat that I can buy?
2) Raising the mast. This seems pretty simple to me (place it into the foot, walk it up vertical and then set the stays) but there may be tricks, gotchas that I'm not thinking of. Any tips would be helpful here.
3) Running rigging. At most I've sailed a jib and mainsail setup with a simple boom. This boom has 3 lines in it, the mast as well. No idea what do to with the boom and the 3rd line on the mast.
4) There are 3 sails with the boat. Did I get 2 jibs? Or is there a way to hang all 3?
5) can I add a spinnaker at some point?

Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks so much!

No, but I think either ChrisM or MrUnix can get you a copy.
2) Raising the mast. This seems pretty simple to me (place it into the foot, walk it up vertical and then set the stays) but there may be tricks, gotchas that I'm not thinking of. Any tips would be helpful here. Easiest with a Gin pole setup. Sounds like you have already done it. If it wasn't that hard then you did it better than most the first time out! ;). Just be careful that the shrouds don't hang up and have plenty of help if it is breezy.
3) Running rigging. At most I've sailed a jib and mainsail setup with a simple boom. This boom has 3 lines in it, the mast as well. No idea what do to with the boom and the 3rd line on the mast. Boom: One line is for the outhaul, one for the topping lift and one for the main reef. Mast: One for the main halyard, one for the Jib halyard. The other?? need pic or description to where it ends up. It might either be a downhaul for the main or a spinaker halyard.
4) There are 3 sails with the boat. Did I get 2 jibs? Or is there a way to hang all 3? You most probably have a 110 Jib and a 150 genoa with a main. (if you don't have 2 mains) Unless your 23 was modified to a cutter sail plan which is doubtful.
5) can I add a spinnaker at some point? You betcha as long as you add the right hardware.

Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks so much!

I have a cleaned-up copy of the Hunter 23 Owner's Manual I can send you. Send a private message to me with your email address and I will get it to you. Just finished it last week!

Cheers,

Chris

The three lines running thru the boom are (as already stated):
1. Main sail out haul
2. Topping lift
3. Leach cringle reefing line.

The three halyards in the mast are:
1. Main sail
2. Jib
3. Spinnaker (yes one can be added)

The primary tip for raising the mast is to watch the t bolts on the very bottom of the shrouds. If they are not upright when tension comes on the shroud, they will bind and then bend.

You most likely have two different sized genoas. It is common to have a 110% and then either a 135% or 150% genoa.
