h23 main reef outhaul slipping

We sailed Saturday night leaving the marina at 10pm in 19-20 knots with just the main reefed. Sailflow called for 12 knots by midnite and it was. My factory main reef outhaul lever cleat on the front of the boom slipped loose 3 times before I dropped the main, lashed it and furled out the jib to about 75%. I'm guessing the reef outhaul line is original and worn by the PO. I plan to replace it but just wanted to make sure I'm not missing something here. Thanks in advance, Charles

Make sure the line was threaded correctly on the cleat. It is a simple mechanism and it should pinch and grab the line unless it was replaced with too thin a line.
