ANyone noticed, in short steep seas, 3-4 feet maybe, that when the front of the boat crashes down into the next wave, the front of the hull (in v birth area) actually FLEXES ?

Just HOW did you "notice" that!

I haven't noticed as yet but sounds likely. Maybe filling V-birth storage area with close foam would strengthen the area? I wonder HOW much foam it would take to sink proof a 23? Greg (damn tight shrouds at the moment) H23 Faster

This is how

My wife was up there sleeping as usual, and I was banging into 3-4 foot seas keeping her awake !

To Greg and M: Weather helm update

Today I was out on the lake in 12-15 kt winds, cranking along comfortably at hull speed with almost no weather helm! How? I put a reef in the main, and tightened the backstay just a hair. It looks like the H23 is just like all the other Hunters and likes to be reefed early. If I sail in winds about 15 kts with the full main, I will make sure to have plenty of weight on the rail. BTW, I still haven't done that bungee-on-the-rudder fix yet because I am wondering if this will affect the rudder's ability to kick up when I run aground (it happened twice today). Peter S/V Raven

Peter - You betcha

Sence I did all the reef system mods on the boom I've become a real believer in reefing on a 23. What you lose in sail area you more than gain back in better hull angle. Greg

Bungee

I was thinking about the bungee-grounding problem too. But I'd take running aground with a bungee around the rudder instead of having the rope try to hold it ! I've done it too - grounded. The rope, as the design is screwy, allows an easy grounding too as it'll slip easy. The best would be a strong bungee all the way to the eye on the rudder, so it'll spring up if it hits something, but water won't push it back/up. Can't say I understand how tightening the backstay would help weather helm, as all the posts (Cliff's esp) point to too much mast rake as being part of the problem. Was out on a friends Cat22 the other eve/night. 4ft real following/breaking seas, 15+ knots. The cat22's don't have a big enough rudder. Wind would round us up and there was nada we could do. I'd rather sail under jib only but...

Tightening backstay for M

Tightening the backstay does not move the masthead back all that much. What it actully does is increase bend by pushing the center of the mast forward below the spreaders. This flattens and depowers the mainsail, which is what I do when the wind picks up. The depowered sail reduces heel and the weather helm does not increase. If flattening the sail with the outhaul and mast bend is not enough, then I reef the main. I still want to try your bungee fix though, because it should reduce the amount of effort that my tillerpilot has to put out and the demand on my batteries. Peter S/V Raven

tighten backstay

Tightening the backstay also tightens the forstay and allows the jib to work better into the wind. Loosen for down wind work.

Huh - sounds good.

Don't have any exp with backstay adjusters yet. I can imagine it would reduce main cavitation a little. My helm was 30lbs though at 15+ knots. I couldn't feather it...that's with the main just barely not luffing. I'd put a 2nd reef in it but the main's too old.

BUNGEE THAT RUDDER

I like the idea of using a bungee cord on the rudder but I haven't figured out HOW to do it. Could one of you fine gentlemen please give me some details of your setup/ideas ? Thanks Keith and Wanda S/V Gwaihir

Bungee Jumping

One more time :+) Take rudder off two pins and put on seat. Careful if rope isn't tight. Put bungee around alum housing and fiber rudder, just above lower pin bracket, to below alum housing on fiber rudder. The idea is to pull the rudder up against alum housing. I use a double wrapped bungee. I have 5-10lbs of helm at 15-20 knots.
