Our 89 23 had a leak in the anchor locker drain ,I was not aware of it, must have happened late last year, the result was water sitting all winter in that foremost compartment . So the carpet that covers that entire area of the boat had this nasty mold on it , I thought we might have to replace it, my wife started cleaning with some clorox clean up with bleach , it got off all of the mold, it did such a great job she kept going , the entire inside of our boat looks like new, there were stains there that we had treated with all sorts of carpet/upholstery cleaner that cleaned right up , in the process she did manage to ruin a set of her sweats, but the carpet sure looks great, I would have been concerned about using this stuff if I hadnot figured we could not do any harm, so thought I would pass it on , regards Mike Bacome

More Details Please

Mike,I had same problem, but my first attempt didn't get all the mold off. What exactly is the product called and did you buy it in a regular store? Also, I assumed it was sprayed on, but was a brush used to scrub it? Chlorine is nasty stuff - sweatsuit found out! - but did the smell of chlorine go away OK? sfor posting this idea and for providing a little more detail. Ron

headliner 11 ,

Ron , specifically the product is clorox, clean up , that is what it is called, it says right on the bottle it contains bleach, she just sprayed it on and then used a small nylon brush , as I mentioned earlier I would have been afraid to use it if not for the fact that I thought the carpet was ruined, and also like I said the carpet has never looked, so good, I had some concern that we might go out in the am and find the carpet handing from the boat , it is still ok there is a faint odor of bleach , but it will be fine we will burn some of those candles that the women like so well, if anyone tries this and has bad luck , guess it is just a crap shoot worked great for us and wante dto let u know . she most likely got the stuff at meijers or kroger , very regular stuff, take care , Mike Bacome

More H23 headliner cleaning...

Thanks for the info Mike! And thanks to Mrs Bacome for trying the Clorox Cleanup! Our H23 had over 20 gallons of water inside when we purchased it! The anchor locker drain hose was the main culprit here also (anyone see a moral to this story?). We sprayed a 40% solution of regular Clorox bleach on the headliner and the bulkheads as well, scrubbed a bit with a hand brush, then cleaned the whole inside with the "Rug Doctor" carpet cleaning machine and their standard detergent. For those not familiar with this machine, it comes with a nice upholstery cleaning attachment that allows you to spray the solution onto the carpet and suck the whole mess back up into the tank. I suppose you could use a good wet/dry vac for this as well. Since then, I've found what appears to be a good alternative to bleach called "NAS-12" by National Allergy Supply (see link below). I was thinking about trying this product since I, too am leary about spraying bleach all over the inside of my boat! Has anybody had any experience with this company?

Yet more info FYI...

I just called the National Allery Supply that I talked about in my last post. A nice lady told me that their NAS-12 product is merely an ALTERNATIVE to bleach for those of us who can't take the odor! She went on to say that if you can use it, bleach is still the best way to go. How about that for honesty! Hope I didn't get anyone's hope up; just wanted to make sure that everone has the correct info. And now I'm goin' sailin'... Jim Maroldo Ocean Gate, NJ
