I am preparing to install a compass into the bulkhead of my 1987 H23. If others have done this, I'd appreciate any advice. There is presently a bracket on the port bulkhead, so if I remove it, there will be two screw holes that I can eliminate by placing the new compass there. of course, this is also the side where the cabin light wiring runs under the interior carpet. Does placing over the galley present any concerns? (I have not lit the stove yet.) Is there an advantage to port or starboard placement? I assume port placement allows for better viewing while motoring? TIA Richard H23 "Invictus"

Starboard bulkhead is better because the stove/galley and the wiring for the cabin light won't be near the back of the compass. Also, if you want to add a swing-out instrument panel, the stbd side would be the natural place, for the samer reasons. All your instruments will be on the same side of the cockpit, which makes it very easy to read them. One more thing...if your compass has an internal light for night use, take the time and wire it into the running light circuit. If you're ever out late and need the running lights, the compass will light up at the same time. You won't forget to turn the compass light off later either. Peter H23 "Raven"

Swing-out instrument panel?

Peter, I have read about the swing-out panel in other posts. What is this? I have a VHF and depth sounder on the bulkhead and I do not care for their placement. Any alternative would be welcome. Richard

instrument panel

I took a piece of wood, fitted it into the companionway slot with a hook on top that grabs the water drain groove and a bungee on the bottom to hold it in place. Mounted GPS and fishfinder on it. Works great, goes off and on in 2 seconds, costs about $1.25, and no holes in the boat.
